Themis

Themis is the titan god of divine law and order. These were the traditional laws set in place by the original gods and titans. She was also a prophetic goddess who would watch over all of the many oracles in greek times. She led man to establish the basic laws of life that were based on the ones established by the original gods. She was also the first wife of Zues. Themis has been pictured as sitting on a throne advising Zues.

Mnemosyne

Mnemosyne is the titan of memory and rememberance. She has also been paired with language and words. Bron before the introduction of writing she represented the memory and thought required to keep records. She has been depicted as a young women and is the mother of the muses.

Hyperion

Hyperion was the greek titan of light. He helped castrate his father with Cronus and three other titans. The titans were positioned in the four corners of the earth and held their father down as Cronus castrated his father. Hyperion has been depicted as the pillar in the East. Hyperion literally means watcher from above which shows how he was viewed in the eyes of the greek people.

Tethys

Tethys was the titan goddess of fresh water. She was also the wife of Oceanus who was the titan god of water. She was the mother of the river gods and sea nymphs as well. She has been pictured as a women giving her children from water derived from an aquifer from below her feet. This represents her marriage with Oceanus as well as her own abilities and charactoristics.

Oceanus

Oceanus was the titan of all of the water on Earth. Oceanos was depicted in ancient Greek vase paintings as a bull-horned god with the tail of a serpentine fish in place of legs, similar to his river-god sons. His usual attributes were a fish and serpent. He had a wife who was a nurse and it is thought to be that she had distributed his water through natural springs underground. Unlike his brothers he didn't take part in the war against the younger gods of Olympus.

Rhea

Rhea was the Titanis mother of the gods, and a goddess of female fertility, motherhood, and generation. Her name means "flow" and "ease." She was the wife of Cronus. The story of Zues being saved involves her, as she is Zues's mother. She was the one who saved Zues and took him to an island where he would never be found and fooled Cronus into eating a rock instead of of her child.

Cronus

Cronus is the titan of time and the ages. Cronus ruled the sky as well. In fear of being overthrown  he swallowed all of his children. But one of the children were saved, Zeus. Zues was hidden on an island and instead he gave Cronus a stone wrapped in cloth. Cronus swallowed the stone as if it was a baby and assumed that Zues was dead. But Zues led a revolt with the gods of Olympus and overthrew the titans and sent them to Tartarus.

Uranus

Uranus is the first ruler of the universe and the god of the sky. Uranus was created by Gaea in order to surround and cover her. Soon he became her "mate" and together they made the remaining twelve Titans, three Cyclopes and three Hecatoncheires, and hundred handed creatures. Everytime one of his children were born, out of fear, he would put them back in Gaea's womb. Cronus was born and Gaea gave him the unbreakable sicle. When Uranus attempted to place him back in the womb he had been castrated by Cronus. The blood from this procedure dropped onto the Earth and had created more evil beings and nymphs. After this Cronus returned all of his brothers and overthrew Uranus. Cronus was the new ruler of the titans.

Gaea

Gaea is one of the first things to arrive at the dawn of creation. All of the heavenly gods were descended from her union with Ouranos(the sky), the sea-gods from her union with Pontos (the sea), the Gigantes from her mating with Tartaros (the hell-pit) and mortal creatures were sprung or born from her. So indirectly she is the grandmother of every greek god that was born of another. She helped Zues fight the titans but then shortly after was angered with him when he sent all of the titans to Tartarus. Some of her children include:
  • Uranus
  • Cronus
  • Rhea
  • Oceanus
  • Tethys
  • Hyperion
  • Mnemosyne
  • Themis
  • Iapetus
  • Coeus
  • Crius
  • Phoebe
  • Thea
  • Cyclopes
  • Hecatoncheires
  • Typhoeus

Basics

I chose to do my project over Greek Titans. I chose this topic because while doing the mythology project I had wanted to go into more depth on the subject. Titans are the "elder-gods" that ruled before the Olympian gods. Many of these beings were associated with the planets. Cronos was the ruler of the titans and lead them in a war against Zeus. After the titans defeat they were sent to Tartarus as punishment. Tartarus is the Greek equivelant to hell. There aer twenty greek titans in all. These include Gaea, Uranus, Cronus, Rhea, Oceanus, Tethys, Hyperion, Mnemosyne, Themis, Iapetus, Coeus, Crius, Phoebe, Thea, Prometheus, Epimetheus, Atlas, Metis, and Dione. Many of these titans are also gods in many other religions.
